One of the hardest aspects of having a young child is finding adequate childcare.
You might struggle daily with affordable childcare. You could be caught off guard by a sudden snow day at school.
Whatever the case is, it may be time to find a job that allows children.
Job Locations Where Children Are Allowed During Work
Kids are not welcome in most places of work. They often cause distractions, must be carefully watched, and generally make the workday more difficult.
Even in my workplace, which is my home, the kids are a major distraction. It’s not surprising that most employers frown on them.
Luckily, there are a few jobs that welcome children on-site. Check out some of these options if you need a job that lets you bring your kids along.
1. Childcare
A childcare facility is a no-brainer when it comes to jobs that let you bring your own kids.
A full-time daycare will probably charge you, but usually at a lower rate.
You might consider starting your own in-home daycare or working as a nanny while your child is young.
2. Fitness Center
Every fitness center I have joined or worked at had some kind of childcare facility on-site.
They generally allow you to keep your child in their care facility while you are working.
3. (Some) Universities
Many universities have on-site childcare for staff and family members.
Those that don’t might allow you to bring your child with you to work on some occasions. My husband works as a professor at a liberal arts college.
Our children have practically grown up on his campus as they are very welcome in his office, in the lounge or even in some of his classes (though my daughter has admitted she was bored by History 101).
4. Church
Working in a church is a great environment for children.
The church might have a childcare facility or they may simply allow you to let your children play nearby. Few churches frown on having children around.
5. Driving
Driving isn’t the safest option for your child but it is an option when others fail. You can drive for companies like Uber and Lyft while securing your child in a car seat with you.
You may have to only choose single clients who can sit with you in the front seat because it is not recommended for a child to sit in the front seat until they are 13.
6. Delivery
Being a delivery driver for companies like Uber Eats and Door Dash has some great perks.
One is that you can choose your own hours. Another perk is that you can bring your child along for the ride.
As long as you have a car seat and a good driving record, you should both be safe and happy during your delivery stops.
7. Birthing Facilities
Birthing centers are places where children are welcome. You can become a doula and help other people enter the beautiful world of parenting.
Better still, you can earn certification and work while keeping your child by your side.
8. Family-Owned Small Retail
Retail establishments and small boutiques can be open to allowing children on-site from time-to-time. Most family-run businesses are well aware of the difficulties parents face when it comes to finding a sitter.
They are usually accommodating as long as you don’t take advantage of their kindness.
9. Farmers Markets
A farmers market is a great place to earn money while also keeping an eye on your children. You can work at someone else’s stand or have your own.
Produce, handicrafts and baked goods are just some of the items you can choose to sell at a farmer’s market.
10. Work from Home
The obvious choice for a lot of parents is to work from home.
While you will be distracted by household chores, friends who pop by and the constant allure of the hidden Halloween candy stash, you will also be with your child throughout the day, every day.
As a work-from-home mom, I can tell you that this is an ideal situation for a lot of parents.
